Καλώς ήρθατε στο τμήμα Ελληνικών Σπουδών!
Welcome to the Department of Hellenic Studies!
A.Fantis Parochial School provides high-quality instruction in Greek language and culture from preschool to eighth grade. Daily language learning is enriched through the use of online media, songs, art, videos, and games. During their studies at A. Fantis our children have the opportunity to:
- Learn about the most fascinating episodes from Greek Mythology (Aesop’s fables, the Olympian Gods, Heracles, Iliad, the Odyssey, etc.) and crucial events from Greek history, which have deeply influenced Western civilization.
- Become immersed in Hellenic culture through our Greek club (where we cook Greek food together, communicate with schools in Greece, etc.), traditional Greek dance (Syrtaki, Cretan, etc.), and drama.
Learn about the values of Christianity and the beliefs of the Greek Orthodox Church.
The Greek drama program gives all Middle School students the chance to perform on stage, speak Greek actively and learn about Hellenic authors and their plays, all the while having fun. We stage one play per year. Past performances have included “The Odyssey” by Homer and “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes which were both adapted for middle school students.
Our Middle School students can take the Greek language certification examinations created by the Center for Greek Language of Thessaloniki (level A1, A2 or B).
Students of the 8th grade may also participate in the Greek Regents examination (Checkpoint B) of the State of New York, organized by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
We prepare our students for these exams, and encourage them to take part in them.
Why learn Greek?
In the US, we speak and write Greek every day without realizing it. Our alphabet partly comes from Greek. Our vocabulary is filled with Greek roots. Our democracy is based on Greek ideals. We all can better appreciate our own language and culture through the careful study of the Greek language and Hellenic studies.
