Second grade is an exciting grade to be in.
The students are provided with a safe and fun learning environment and are encouraged and motivated to work in groups to enhance their overall social and educational development. Different subjects are interconnected to incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and PBL (Project Based Learning). Interactive and hands-on trips throughout the year emphasize what is taught in the classroom.Language Arts – An emphasis is put on writing skills as students:
Develop an extensive sight word vocabulary.
Apply more complex phonics strategies.
Write competently for many purposes.
Use punctuation appropriately.
Experience a variety of literary genres.Math – Students explore number facts in real world applications by:
Applying numbers sense to the four basic operations.
Understanding the use of money in real life situations.
Applying the various methods of measurement.
Exploring probability and using data.

Science – Students explore our world and take part in experiments to see how things grow and change.
Patterns in Nature -Students will learn the steps in the life cycle, the food chain and lessons focus on the different characteristics of the different types of animals and plants.
Force and Motion – Students learn about magnetism and the law of magnetic attraction, and apply these to real life objects.
Earth and Space – Students learn about Earth and its changes, and the objects in our Solar System.

Social Studies – Our students have the opportunity to learn about our community both past and present.
Wants and Needs – Students learn about the basic human needs of food, clothing, and shelter and how these needs are met.
Earth Science – Students learn about using maps to locate the United States as well as individual states. Map symbols, use of globes, and cardinal directions are taught.
Contributions to Science – Students learn about historic places, the symbols, icons, buildings, and holidays that represent American beliefs and principles.
