Middle School Mathematics at A FantisA Fantis has a comprehensive mathematics program that involves much work with hands on mathematics.
We are aligned to the Common Core mathematics curriculum.
Some students who are interested in solving novel mathematics problems have presented and published solutions in NCTM’s Mathematics Teaching in Middle School.
The mathematics department believes in integrating literacy in mathematics, and has embraced the use of a cross-curricula Achieve3000 program (http://www.achieve3000.com/).
The department also maintains a mathematics club that allows students to explore areas and problems outside of the regular curriculum.
Below are a few highlights of the Middle School Mathematics Department’s program by grade.

Grade 5 Common Core Mathematics
The grade 5 mathematics curriculum is mostly focused on building conceptual understanding of positive integers and positive rational numbers.
Therefore, our Math 5 class uses the JAM sessions practice on https://www.tenmarks.com/ both in class and for homework. The students get to practice whole numbers and fractions operations, often achieving JAM Pro status.
The feedback and grading are immediate and the whole system is kid-friendly.
https://www.tenmarks.com/ also allows my students to practice word problems on any topic covered in class.
There are second chances for incorrect solutions/answers as well amplifiers that more fully explain each topic.
There are also hints and videos embedded in every regular problem set. Another way in which we use Tenmarks is to do tests and quizzes.
Students like this since they get their grades as soon as they complete the tests.

Grade 6 Common Core Mathematics
The grade 6 mathematics curriculum is mostly focused on building conceptual understanding of positive and negative integers and positive rational numbers.

under all four binary operations as well as a solid und standing of ratios and proportions.
Math 7 is also the first year of our 2-year Common Core Algebra 1 sequence.

Common Core Algebra 1
The grade 8 mathematics curriculum is is the Common Core Algebra 1 curriculum and is thus mostly focused on functions and equations.
Students practice problems in these topics on https://www.ixl.com/ .
This software is very student friendly. Students receive immediate feedback on every problem solved.
The Olympic style ribbon awards is very exciting for our students. Students have access to this software at all times.
The course culminates in the New York State Regents examination given each June.
